InsideOut: Write-A-Thon

Write-A-Thon

How does a nonprofit market their first ever virtual fundraiser?

InsideOut Literary Arts, a Detroit-based creative writing and literacy nonprofit, turns 25 this year—but their annual in-person fundraising event had to transition online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I was tasked with helping them build out the visual style of the event (completely in the online design program, Canva) as well as templates for direct-mail and Facebook/Instagram/Twitter to get the word out and reach new audiences for their novel Write-A-Thon.

Direct-mail postcard

The first step in the marketing process was announcing the shift from an in-person to an online fundraiser.
This postcard was sent to past attendees of the in-person event at the beginning of July.

“I’m Participating” graphics

The next step was beginning online outreach and generating interest via social media.
These graphics were developed to both announce the online fundraiser and to be used as
tools for individuals to spread the word on their own accounts.

“Champion of Youth Voice” donation highlight

This template was built to highlight and serve as a public thank-you to groups
or individuals who make substantial donations during the fundraiser.

“Detroit Literature” Instagram filter

Working with InsideOut was a very collaborative process and I was encouraged to share my own ideas for improving their social media outreach. I pitched the concept of generating excitement with a custom-built Instagram filter, and they loved it!

The iO team wanted to highlight the works of Detroit-based authors, so they put together a list of 10 works which I then turned into a randomized filter in Facebook’s Spark AR program.

You can find out which Detroit literary work you are by visiting InsideOut’s Instagram page and clicking on the “effects” tab.

Client Testimonial

“We couldn't have asked for a more talented and conscientious design volunteer than Bridget. We shared our vision for our virtual Write-A-Thon fundraiser with her as well as expected design needs, and she designed a suite of templates and materials in Canva for social media, website, and email that coordinate with our brand while introducing an innovative new event. Bridget was responsive, timely, and above all a great collaborator who offered her instincts and improved upon our initial thoughts.”
